Team Rocks 8 vs. Team Babushka 7 Another MDHL classic and a buzzer beater at that... Friday, February 7, 2003
Can it be?? Another hum-dinger classic for the MDHL storybooks as a nail biter of a game finishes at the buzzer! Yet again, it was Team Rocks coming out on top even after the seemingly equalizing mid-season trades had transpired. Both teams enjoyed dividends from their new players but none moreso than Team Rocks with their permanent fixture in Kevin "outta the minors and on the big show now" Mah and his late heroics with the game winner in the dying seconds. Team Rocks' also fielded a sub replacement in aging (but delightfully youthful) veteran Gordon "yipee, my wife let me come out to play" Chan to field part of an all-grit line of J.Chiu-Lim-chan. It was however, Rocks' big line of Chang-Carvell-Mah doing all the damage accounting for seven goals and notably the game's early 5-0 lead jumping all over the hapless opposition.
Yikes, it sure didn't look good for Team Babs but they did have a highlight goal on a 2 on 1 feed to newly-traded-newbie Michael "a fresh start and new contract was all I needed" Nguyen burying the puck like an all-star. Otherwise, the early going was o-so-bleak with Team Babs missing their captain and perennnial all-star in Sean "overslept... with who and doing what, I won't say" Oye who missed the first period or so. After Oye suited up, the pace of play (and Babs' offence) picked up about eighteen notches and lo and behold it was a 6-6 tie in the late stages! (Much to the group sigh of relief from Oye's entire bench.) With newly traded Babs' F Chris "let's stick it to those bastards" Archibald turning in a stellar outing in forming an equally potent line with Oye and Kenny "behold my shiny new gold Synergy stick to pummel y'all with" Chiu, the momentum was quickly a shiftin' for Team Babs.
It became desperate hockey at both ends as Rocks fought back to a 7-6 lead in the late stages, but almost as soon as the face-off occurred, Babs bounced back with the tie breaker on a deflected, silly shot off Rocks' D Terry "I decline that assist, but thanks" Wong's stick to beat G Samson "always remain cool as a cucumber" Chow. And with the final buzzer just moments away, a mad scramble ensued at the Babs' end of the rink with an equally silly play where the puck managed to bounce of the post, off a heel and into the net for the game winner, just as Mah had planned it!
MDHL 3 Stars:
3. Anthony Chang... lots of offense including the game tying goal.
2. Sean Oye... has there ever been a more dominant MDHLer?
1. Kevin Mah... game winner as his first official regular roster game, not too shabby. |
