SPRING 2004 SERIES: SUMMARY GAME REVIEWS

Spring Series News and Notes
Thursday, April 22, 2004

WEEK 10: Team TRAVIS/SEAN 16 vs. ALLEN/DEREK 14... A rare win (just their third) for the series losing Team Travis/Sean... a bit anti-climatic without a series on the line but a good game nonetheless, to wrap up the season... The 'Sherman' experiment does not pay dividends looking for an unprecedented third hat trick in as many games at forward, but does result in some key assists... UK import and alumni member Jeff Yu makes his welcome return to the ice on a short stint back in Canada and tallies an early G and an A... otherwise, both teams came to play and wrapped things up in fine fashion with a post-game pizza-pig-out at BP afterwards to conclude the series and the season...

WEEK 9: Team ALLEN/DEREK 21 vs. Team TRAVIS/SEAN 9... With many core players in absence on both benches (due to a conflicting roller hockey game) Team ALLEN/DEREK avenged last week's one goal loss with a firestorm win... trusty forward Aaron Oye leads the charge followed by Sherm Woo's second appearance at forward and yet another hat trick in as many games... the debut of Alex Guanzon between the pipes was a successful one as he fit right into the mix with great saves galore... on the losing team, Sean Oye (fresh off a 10-goal outing last week) was flanked by an all-power line of Eric-Rich-Travis-Sean-Tyson and while looking deadly as a unit, were unable to make up the difference... their only powerplay was overshadowed by allowing two shorthaned markers (a record!) including an embarassing 'own-goal' by Eric Ocampo!

WEEK 8: Team TRAVIS/SEAN 15 vs. Team ALLEN/DEREK 14... Only the second win of the series for Team Travis/Sean and a nail biter at that... the game sputtered early on with goalie Zig arriving late and a "crossbar and middle post" alternating game until then... Jason manages to hit the bar early on but is called back on a questionable two-line pass... meanwhile Jax pulls his second no-show of the series leaving his team with only seven skaters... Travis' team makes the most of a quick start and jumps to a 6-0 lead but was soon erased and a close game ensued... Sherm Woo makes a rare start on the wing and pays dividends with three goals... both Oye brothers were dominating for their sides but ultimately it was Rich Chang with the game winner...

WEEK 7: Team ALLEN/DEREK 19 vs. Team TRAVIS/SEAN 13... Yet another win for Team ALLEN as D man Brian Kindrachuk turns in a dominant and potent outing from the blueline... Captain Allen (again!) plays a key role in this game featuring *seven* subs... Stan Quan has an offensive explosion with two goals including a bank-off-Zigs-butt goal... once again, it starts our close but Team TRAVIS could not keep up tied at 13 a piece... not a chippy game but featured a few freak injuries as Dharmesh donks his shoulder and Lawrence gets a skate cuts followed by an outing in the hospital for stitches...

WEEK 6: Team ALLEN/DEREK 12 vs. Team TRAVIS/SEAN 9... In honour of the (NHL) playoffs, it appears captain Al Leung turns in his own "Iginla-like" peformance leading his team on both ends of the rink... on the other end, captain Travis Wong is back action albeit still a shadow of his former self on the road to recovery... sub (and still nowhere near beer drinkin' age) Eric Cheng makes an appearance and dazzles with a Doug Weight style goal while Sean Oye does his usual thing with a few mighty blasts... Derek has been out of action for awhile but his team still puts up the win!

WEEK 5: Team Dark 9 vs. Team White 5... Travis sits out yet another game after trying to come back for 1/2 a shift... Aaron Oye hits the big time outplaying his big bro and notching 5 dingers... both teams played nine aside but that seemed like luxury based on the previous few outings... Calvin Cheng gets another big win as the youngster is becoming a phenom (okay, not quite but looking good)... Albert takes the game's only penalty on a blatant trip of assistant captain Derek... Goalie Zig will be looking for a better game after posting the loss and appearing late in two consecutive weeks!

WEEK 4: Team White 13 vs. Team Dark 12... Another subbed out nightmare as the teams play SEVEN aside and have no complaints for ice time by anyone yet again... to even the bodies, Dark's Stan Quan is traded over in the pre-game... yet it turned out to be another close, entertaining game... Travis has yet to make an impact being out with injury while his replacement Nixon makes a solid debut... it was Albert Chang arguably the highlight player of the game with great moves including a sweet goal and a quadruple-deke-just-tackle-me-now play all alone in front... Anthony Chang plays OT hero picking the pocket of usually steady D Ron Pong in his own zone for the uncontested breakaway winner... especially after a last-moment game tying goal by captain Allen Leung to steal the momentum just moments ago... young goalie Calvin gets his first win!

WEEK 3: Team Dark 11 vs. Team White 6... The match ran like an endurance test as only 8 skaters aside with numerous subs and Travis and Stan being pre-game scratches (due to ailments and sickness)... White goalie Jason Zeidler gives his team a scare with a late appearance while Captain Allen shrugs it all off and leads his team again with some nice goals... Dark goalie Norm Chan played his last game of the season as he's off to softball duty... Team White were behind the eight-ball all game long with lots of threatening rushes but few chances from the inside... lone White highlight? How bout that Skate slapper from the slot? Dark had a rare goal from Gord Chan to ignite the bench while they cruised to victory!

WEEK 2: Team Dark 9 vs. Team White 8... Another thrilla for the ages as both teams traded leads like a see-saw all night long... Stan puts up a career offensive clinic with chances galore and a backhand deke goal for his personal highlight reel... Brian takes the rare "no high slapshot" penalty after dropping Lawrence who got beaned in the ribs... but Jason scored on the shorthanded effort to add some salt to that wound... Jay Chu/Lawrence/Terry found some chemistry on a new line but ultimately it was Ron playing the hero with a Jovo-in-deep like goal scoring the game winner with only 15 seconds left in regulation! Zig (Jason Z) gets his first win since his return to action playing behind the stellar D peformances of Sherm and Gordo... 'til next week!

EXHIBITION SERIES: Team Hao 12 vs. Team MDHL 9... MDHL remains winless in three years again this team being forced (again) to play a grinding, contact style game... generally clean but not free flowing with tugs, hooks and contact on nearly every carry... goalie Norm played well and Fraser drew lots of unwanted attention... but playing against a regular squad the MDHL did not have the chemistry or bodies to compete... missing Sean/Travis/Tyson in the days before didn't help!

WEEK 1: Team Dark 13 vs. Team White 12... New teams, new captains, new venue... all to mark our unofficial mid-season point... Brian was flyin' for Team Dark after recouping his back... 2 penalties marked this game including a phantom 'no touch' tripping call... Skate and Sean were ripping it up and look to do it all series long... while lil bro Aaron makes his regular season debut with cramping and all... MDHL welcomes back regular goalie Jason Zeidler who dusts off the pads to backstop our league!
