Team Sherman Chan 8 vs. Team MDHL 5 MDHL's first ever loss in exhibition play… Friday, September 27, 2002
The much-anticipated pre-season exhibition game against Team Sherman Chan
turned out to be a humbling experience as the MDHL suffer their first-ever
defeat against foreign competition. The enemy were indeed the better
prepared team, never having relinquished the lead and having already played
as a team (which helps I suppose) in a Tier 5 league on the North Shore.
Rumour has it they've been undefeated there this season, but nonetheless,
they took the play to the Doggers while most of us still had TV remotes
jammed up our arses from the summer vacation with the energy levels
displayed.
Too bad your lame captain wasn't able to convert on any of his
three breakaways either. However, some bright spots, as Skate resumes his
scoring pace with a hat trick and D-Master Oye nets one other. General
consenus was that we missed the stellar play of MDHLers Ian "17+ hours to
fly is too far for an exhibition game" Melhado and Chris "gee, is one ankle
good enough to play with?" Archibald.
Team MDHL rolled their three forward
lines quite nicely with new faces in the lineup including Dom "the
Dominator" Kwong scoring a nice goal on a second effort while Basse Clement
and AJ Vickery brought their lunch buckets and went to work. All and all
Team Sherman Chan were the better conditioned atheletes on this night and
their puck possession time and play in our zone showed, while drawing the
game's only two penalties, the MDHLers able to notch a one powerplay goal in
payback. A good "trial by fire" test to kick off the MDHL season this fall.
