//Rules and Protocol

Generally speaking, the MDHL is a casual and fun recreational league. Our rules and protocol are listed here (in the links on the left column) just as a primer for the first-time player or for a refresher for the specifics of our league.

Review the entire rule book or else our recent rule updates and additions are summarized as follows:

AUG/11
  • Rule 22 (update). Sportsmanlike code of conduct required before, during or after any game.
JUN/11
MAR/11
  • Rule 8 (update). Penalty calls may now be "self-called" based on the honour system.
NOV/10
  • Rule 2a. Full time players may be subject to suspension for late-notice sub out transactions.
  • Rule 22. Full time players may lose their renewal privileges if unable to attend the majority of the games in the current series.
JAN/10
  • Crease rule is escalated to disallow any foot-in-crease, resulting in clearing of the offensive zone.
  • Goalie selection criteria has been updated to reflect the underdog team having first choice.
NOV/09
  • Scoring mercy clause is now updated to reflect a 5+ goal differential to trigger a goalie swap option for the losing team.
OCT/06
  • GMs and captains are empowered to call penalty shots in their estimation; which supersede a usual penalty-time call (if called by another GM/captain for the same incident).
JAN/06
  • All substitutes will be assigned to teams at the GMs discretion (using the MDHL player rating system for reference purposes).
  • Penalties now last THREE minutes each (running time).
  • Hooking infractions will be zero-tolerance (resulting in penalty calls)
  • Captains, assistants, as well as GMs will be granted the authority to call penalties.
  • Captains, assistants, as well as goalies and GMs will be included in controversial goal decisions; goalies will have the final say in disputes.
